Wonderland’s War, not only is it one of the best looking games you will ever see but, it also has really great mechanics and gameplay that keep everyone around the table engaged at all times. If you have ever wanted to play around in the world of Alice in Wonderland then this game may be right up your street.
The game is played over 3 rounds of 2 main stages. The first phase, the tea party, is all about getting cards that help you to improve your powers. The second phase is a battle for the areas where you have your minions; you battle by pulling chips out of your bag and playing a very tense push your luck game against your opponents. There are usually battles in every area and the winner gets all the points plus they can place a castle on to the board in that area and the 2 places player gets half of the areas points.
The whole game is dripping with Alice in Wonderland theme. Each character looks great and their powers fit well with the theme. You can choose to play as one of 5 assymetrical characters and each can unlock different powers as you play; Alice, The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, The Cheshire Cat and the Jabberwock.
Components in Wonderland’s War are numerous; each of the 5 characters has 14 meeples, 5 castles, tokens with their own symbols on, a draw bag, artifact tokens and then there are all the other ally tokens and Wanderlandian standees. The 235 tokens in the base game are cardboard, so it is advisable to also order 25mm coin capsules to keep them in good condition (unless you order the deluxe edition that comes with plastic tokens).
The art in this game leaves you with your mouth wide open for more than a moment. It just looks phenomenal. With art this good rarely comes a game that matches. However, this is one of the rare cases that breaks the mold
